Position Summary

The Shunt Driver, Coronation Landfill, reports to the Division Manager, Dedicated Services. This employee is responsible for overseeing the safe and efficient unloading of frozen trailers at the Coronation landfill. The position is a seasonal, winter, shunt driver contract position located at the Waste Connections of Canada Coronation Landfill. The contract will be a 5-month term position from November to April.

Key Responsibilities

  • Thawing frozen, loaded, trailers at the Progressive Coronation landfill (operating Tri-Line thaw box equipment)
  • Operating a shunt tractor to hook to thawed, loaded trailers and back onto the tipper to empty loads
  • Attention to detail to communicate with Progressive scale house and staff to record accurate times and with Tri-Line dispatch on specific trailers, empty times and all relevant, required information
  • Perform minor mechanical repairs to thaw box and trailer equipment (e.g. glad hands or air lines)
  • Document and report damaged equipment (take pictures, complete incident reports)
  • Ongoing, direct communication with Waste Dispatch with company cell phone

 

Schedule

Monday to Friday, with hours ranging from 05:00 – 23:00, depending upon weather and prevalence of frozen trailers.

The Shunt Driver is expected to report to work daily, regardless of weather conditions

 

Position Requirements

  • Valid Class 1 License, preferred
  • Adaptability to changing environmental conditions
  • Experience operating Tri-drive tractors and 53 foot trailers
  • Proven experience with moving and loading trailers
  • Operation of thaw box equipment
  • Light mechanical experience
  • Strong communication skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work (walking, pushing, pulling, lifting)
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Superior customer service ability and organizational skills

 

 

Required Job Duties

  • Turn on thaw box, make sure heaters are working (daily, regardless of weather)
  • Rescue tractor and trailers on the highway as needed
  • Keep an inventory of which trailers have been thawed
  • Operate all equipment in a safe and timely manner
  • Communicate with Landfill staff and driver in a professional manner
  • General maintenance of thaw box area & tractor trailers
  • Implementation of minor mechanical repairs
  • Reporting major mechanical repairs (after hours; Baja Mechanics)
  • Travel to pick up fuel
  • Keel thaw box and surrounding area clean and tidy
  • Communicate to Operations via time log-sheets
  • Perform additional duties as directed
